Advanced Lab Testing
Specialty Testing
Uncover Hidden Imbalances
Advanced laboratory testing is one of the most powerful tools in a functional medicine doctor’s toolbox.
Advanced or specialty functional medicine testing refers to comprehensive testing that goes beyond standard medical screenings. These tests identify underlying imbalances or dysfunctions in the body. Testing focuses on areas such as hormone levels, gut health, nutrient deficiencies, toxicity, infections, inflammation, and genetic factors.
Advanced lab testing provides a deeper understanding of your unique health status. This helps us create your personalized Aura Functional Medicine Treatment Plan that addresses the root cause of your health issues, rather than just managing symptoms.
Advanced functional medicine lab testing looks for root causes that you might not intuitively connect to your health condition. For example, in over 90% of the cases we see, we trace the root cause of any illness to gut imbalances seen on comprehensive gut health testing. Once these imbalances are corrected, we see improvement in digestive issues, hormone levels, skin conditions, anxiety, depression, fatigue, food allergies, autoimmune diseases, weight, and more.

Advanced lab testing is part of our signature Whole Health Transformation Program, which aims to prevent disease and help you live with more vitality.
During your first visit, Dr. Alison will select certain laboratory tests based on your history to explore possible root causes of your chronic health problems. You’ll receive an in-depth lab review during your second visit and you’ll learn how imbalances are affecting your health. Dr. Alison will develop a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to your results.
Advanced Test Considerations
Toxins
Pesticides, insecticides, glyphosate, toxic metals, hormone-disrupting chemicals, mycotoxins, plastics, and other environmental toxins.
Advanced Gut Testing
Assess digestion, inflammation, mucosal immunity, infections, and other imbalances.
Comprehensive Hormone Testing
Sex hormones and hormone metabolism, adrenals, thyroid, insulin, and pituitary function.
Advanced Lipid/Cholesterol Testing
There is a lot more to cardiovascular heath than the traditional cholesterol panel. We assess cholesterol particle size, multiple markers of inflammation, insulin, blood sugar and more.
Metabolic Health
Insulin, blood sugar, HOMA-IR, HbA1C%. We also assess the diet, lifestyle, genetics, toxins, stressors, and nutrient deficiencies that impact metabolic health.
Infections
Lyme and co-infections, parasites, viruses, bacterial and fungal infections.
Immune Function
Advanced testing can provide additional insight into autoimmune reactions, food reactions and chronic inflammation.
Micronutrients
Vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants, essential fats/omega 3 & 6. These nutrients are critical building blocks and co-factors for health and healing.
Metabolomix/ Organic Acid Testing (OAT)
Small biochemical substances produced by a cell, organism, or tissue. Analyzing these small molecules can provide additional information about our biochemistry including mitochondrial health, infections, toxicity, metabolism and more.
Telomeres
Telomere length is an important aspect of healthy aging. Testing allows us to track the impact of lifestyle factors, supplements, and other health-optimization tools.
Epigenetics
Markers such as DNA methylation help us understand how our genes are being expressed. This provides feedback on how diet, lifestyle, supplements, medications, and environment affect the way your genes are behaving.
Genetics
We all have variations in our genes that make us unique. Rarely does one gene impact one thing in the body. In most cases, clusters of genes work together in ways that increase or decrease our susceptibility to certain health challenges.
- Genetic testing can provide information about:
- Weight Balance
- Fitness & Recovery
- Collagen & Joints
- Hormone Health
- Brain Health
- Heart Health
- Blood Sugar & Insulin
- Inflammation
- Histamine
- Methylation
- Detoxification

On The Cutting Edge
Functional Medicine
Functional medicine is simply the coined term for an approach to health care that is holistic and patient-centered. It incorporates the latest scientific understanding about how environmental and lifestyle factors interact with your individual biology to influence sickness and health.
Although we do not bill insurance directly, most patients with Health Savings Accounts (HSA) or Flex Spending Accounts (FSA) can use their respective cards to pay for services, lab tests and supplements through our office.
We can also provide you with a superbill of services, which can be submitted to your insurance company (excluding Medicaid, Medicare or Kaiser) for possible reimbursement.
A very small percentage of our patients have received insurance reimbursement for visits, lab tests and/or supplements, but it varies greatly depending on your plan.
We get special pricing on lab tests and pass along the savings to you.
Since every patient’s plan is personalized, the cost can vary. Please schedule a discovery call to learn more. Some labs are included in the price of the signature Whole Health Transformation Program. We get special pricing on lab tests and pass along the savings to you.
Functional medicine operates on a holistic model that views the body as interconnected systems, while conventional medicine tends to focus on treating specific symptoms or diseases. As a result, the tests used in functional medicine may not align with the traditional medical model or standard diagnostic criteria.
Functional medicine labs often use cutting-edge tests that are still evolving and may not be widely adopted or recognized by mainstream medical institutions. Some of these tests are less well-known or may have fewer large-scale studies backing them compared to traditional lab tests.
We hear this a lot, and there is a strong chance that you haven't actually been tested for everything. Most traditional medical doctors do not evaluate their patients for things like toxic chemicals, heavy metals, nutritional deficiencies, toxic mold, viruses and past trauma. We use very sophisticated diagnostic tests that uncover these problems and give us real answers. To date, we've never had a patient with "all normal" test results. There are always reasons for chronic symptoms and illness!
True healing takes time, which is why we offer 6- and 12-month programs. We offer one-time visits to our patients who have completed the program on an as-needed basis. Many patients who come to see us have complex health issues that require this length of time for true resolution.
In your Discovery Call with Dr. Alison, you learn about the program options that would best fit your unique case. People with less complex cases or who are not very sick may be eligible for an Advanced Lab Workup with review. This “mini-program” is for those who want to give functional medicine a try and don’t require extensive care.
